A Late Summer Birthday & Starting 4K

As you know, our 5 year old boy started 4 year old Kindergarten a few weeks ago. Roman was born less than a week before the September 1st date that Wisconsin uses for school enrollment cutoff. I remember when I was pregnant with Roman and found out that I was due in late August. Even before he was born I can recall thinking about/analyzing whether I would send my baby off to Kindergarten at 5 years or wait until they were 6. Totally crazy!!

I was going to share a post at some point outlining the details as to why we decided to wait to send Roman off to school but this has become a hot topic for us recently because there have been some questions from parties at his school as to why he is not enrolled in 5 year old Kinder.

First of all this is a huge, individual choice for families so no judgment at all!! I have friends who have sent their late summer birthday kids off to school early and they have done awesome. I also have a friend who sent his August birthday child off to 4K last year and is now having his daughter repeat 4K because she simply wasn't ready to move on to Kindergarten. When I talk about our decision to hold Roman with other families, I almost always get an affirmative response about a son/family friend/nephew/etc that they have in their life who waited for Kindergarten and it was the best decision. Or, on the flip side, they share a story about someone they know who should have waited a year to start school.

So here is why we waited to send Roman off to school:

1. We wanted him to be one of the older/more mature kids in the class. Do we think that he could have handled the academics of school as a new 4 year old? Sure. Do we think that he was ready to sit still/listen/keep his hands to himself in a classroom setting last year? Nope. Roman just needed another year to grow and mature before he was ready for 4K and that is okay! Boys usually mature later anyway and we didn’t want him to be the very youngest kiddo in his class.

2. We wanted Roman to enjoy his childhood! I feel like we live in a culture that does not always value unstructured time/free play/pretending. Parents often want and/or feel pressured to have their children in a classroom/academic setting as soon as possible. There is so much to learn by being outdoors, focusing on pretend play, socializing with other kids, etc outside of a classroom. Roman has his whole life to be in an academic/work setting. Plus, if we didn’t hold him back, Dan and I would be moving him into a college dorm as a brand new 18 year old someday. Um, no thanks! Like most boys, he can can probably benefit from an extra year of development when it comes to forethought/judgement.

3. We wanted to set Roman up for success! Would it have been easier financially to save on a year of day care and send him to school early? Absolutely! But, what if he needed speech or vision therapy? We would have paid out of pocket for those things, no questions asked. All parents want to set their children up for success whether than means paying for therapy, getting glasses, or spending more on day care. We felt that, if we sent Roman to 4K too early, that he would hear a whole lot of ‘Sit still’, ‘Keep your hands to yourself’, ‘Be quiet’, etc. (Although I know that teachers would say it in a much better way than I would! Hahahaha!) Dan and I wanted him to enjoy the classroom setting and have a good foundation for his academic career rather than potentially kicking things off with behavioral/discipline issues. That’s not to say that he won’t get into trouble this year!! We are only a few weeks into the school year and we already have had some issues on the school bus. Ai Yi Yi!

Bottom line: Go with your gut!!! No one knows your kid like you do! Just because you are ‘supposed to’ send your child as soon as they meet the date cutoff does Not mean that it is the right choice for your kiddo. It is 100% up to you as a parent -- do what is best for your kid and your family! :)

Roman's 1st Day of 4K!

Roman has been counting down the days to 4K ever since his sister went back to school in early September. He could not wait to start his classes at the big school.

Roman also requested pancakes for his special breakfast. Please note that my obligation to make pancakes on a weekday morning 2 times in 2 weeks is officially done! Hahaha! We will now return to our regularly scheduled programming of cereal, fruit, and hard boiled eggs.

Lucy wanted to make sure that her little brother looked good for his first day of 4K so she offered to brush his hair for him. I love this! ;)

Here is our Roman - so ready for his first day of 4K with Mrs. Powell.

I can't believe that I now have two lunch boxes and back packs to get ready in the mornings! Thank you to Uncle Brad for the awesome Storm trooper back pack! :)

Roman shed zero tears, there was no clinging on his first day - this guy zipped off to class! Mom on the other hand cried half way to work. I blame the pregnancy hormones! My babies just grow up so fast.

We love you Roman and hope that you have the best year with Mrs. Powell!

Early September Happenings

Here are some snapshots of early September happenings at the Storm Household.
I stumbled across Lucy's summer journal - here was the first entry from our camping trip to Door County. I love that it is so joyful and optimistic - I love to camp all day and every day! If you will recall, that camping trip ended early due to torrential rains and flash flood warnings so we bailed on our campsite and headed to a hotel in Green Bay.

Thus resulting in the second entry of Lucy's journal ... 'I love the hotel pool every day!' Hahahaha!
I love that Lucy sees the positive in everything. :)

The children had dental appointments recently. We still had watch areas but there were no cavities to report! Yay! Everyone was excited to get new trinkets from the dentist treasure box.

Okay, I hardly even post any pictures of food because we don't make the most exciting dishes and we live in Rhinelander where eating at Culver's is considered fine dining but I have two meals to report on from early September. First up - Dan bought a bunch of lamb meat so we made a hummus/pine nut/pepper/onion/lamb dish and dipped pita bread in the mix. It was so good!!

Next up - these shrimp! I made a sweet and spicy marinade with Sriracha sauce, cilantro, and honey that Dad dropped off from his and Kevin's hives. Delicious!

Roman brought a bunch of sweet artwork home from his Under the Sea unit at day care.

The kids started soccer this fall! The season is just a few weeks long but we thought it would be a good introduction for them. Here are our little soccer players - they were so excited to play! And, yes - we did comb Lucy's hair before we left the house. Haha!

Roman zipped over to his team right away and loved every minute of the morning. He even listened to the coaches and participated which gives me hope that he will be a good student in 4K! Hah! Lucy on the other hand was pretty intimidated. She quickly saw that she was the only girl on her little team and started crying. Sigh. The boys in her group had played the sport before so they knew more soccer basics than her which was also not the best for her confidence. After some pep talks, hugs, and convincing from mom and dad she decided to participate. By the end of the practice, she had a smile on her face and was having a great time. I am so proud of her for sticking with it!

Roman continues with his frog and toad hunts! We have had some beautiful weather so there have been lots of these creatures out and about this month.

Lucy and I decorated the house for fall - she just loves putting out things for the holidays. :) She snapped a picture of her favorite pumpkin with my phone.

Finally, here is what our Monday nights look like! While Lucy is in dance class, Roman and I read books, eat snacks, and dance along with the music that floats down the halls. :)

Happy September!

Lucy's 1st Day of 1st Grade!

I can't believe that my little peanut is already in 1st grade!! Where does time go? She was so excited to wear her new unicorn dress, unicorn leggings, and - best of all - new panda-corn earrings! Lucy got her ears pierced this summer and she is now able to change her earrings. Earring selection has become a big part of her wardrobe decisions these days. :)

Of course we had a special breakfast on this momentous day. Lucy chose chocolate chip pancakes!

We love you Lucy and we can't wait to see what new things you learn this year. :)

Labor Day

We were invited to an End of Summer Barbeque at Jeff at Jillian's house this Labor Day.

Roman was so excited to spend some time with his sweet friend IzzyB.

The kids had a whole bunch of Nerf gun wars and were invited to participate in horse chores.

We patiently waited for Jeff to bring the horses in for their supper.

After the horses ate their food, the kids got to climb up for a bit! So much fun! What a great way to wrap up summer. :)

Thank you to Jeff and Jillian for having us over and letting us ride your horses!

Porcupine Mountains Trip

This Labor Day weekend we headed to the Porcupine Mountains for a camping trip with Grandma Sharon and Grandpa Glen.

Grandma and Grandpa brought their camper and our little family stayed in a yurt!

We just love listening to waves of Lake Superior.

We snapped a quick family picture on the rocky beach. The kids are becoming very good at skipping rocks!

It stormed on Friday night so it was still very wet and a little rainy of Saturday morning. We ate breakfast in the yurt and played a few games before heading out for the day. Lucy schooled Grandpa on the rules of Mancala.

The first hike of the day was to scenic Lake of the Clouds.

This place is so beautiful! Someday we will make it up here when the leaves are turning.

Here we are overlooking the Lake.

Our next stop was a picnic followed by a hike up to an observation tower.

Here is the whole crew at the top of the tower.

Just look at this spectacular view!

We found hollow logs on our hike!

We saw lots of streams and waterfalls!

We spent time wading and skipping rocks in Lake Superior!

We visited one of favorite footbridges near Overlooked Falls.

We love hiking with Grandma and Grandpa!

I love this crew!

And here is proof that Mama and Baby Storm were on the hike as well. :)

After all of that hiking, we needed to end our Saturday evening with ice cream!

The kids loved visiting the outpost!

Here is a snapshot of life at Camp Hoekman/Storm!

The children loved hunting for frogs and toads thanks to the recent rain.

On Sunday morning we found a sandy beach and these crazy kiddos did some swimming in Lake Superior. It was f-r-e-e-z-i-n-g!

We hiked an old mining trail on Sunday afternoon.

We saw all kinds of remains from the old copper mine.

The path was a little bit muddy but there were a few raised paths over the very messy areas. Lucy like to pretend that these were balance beams ... she was practicing some yoga on this one. ;)

It was another beautiful trail. We love visiting the Upper Peninsula!

And, as usual, we finished out our trip with some games of Rummikub by lantern and flashlight in the yurt.

What a wonderful weekend! Thanks again Mom and Dad for joining us on this adventure!
